Mirror Politics morning newsletter - Civil War, part II

Morning,

With the dust settling after Labour’s tumultuous party conference in Liverpool, all eyes will now turn to Birmingham as the Tories’ annual shindig gets underway this weekend.
It is easy to forget amid Labour’s civil war just how divided the Conservative Party remains following the Brexit vote in June.
We got a helpful reminder yesterday as the relatively sensible wing of her party – I did say *relatively* - represented by Ken Clarke and Nicky Morgan warned Mrs May to stop dithering and set out a vision for Brexit that protects the UK economy.
Meanwhile up in Manchester, the swivel-eyed Tory Right was out in force as Brexiteer-in-chief Liam Fox merrily announced we will soon be a ‘newly independent member’ of the World Trade Organisation – suggesting our lucrative single market access will soon be a thing of the past.

Theresa May faces a near-impossible task in trying to keep both wings of her party happy.
The Prime Minister has so far managed to keep a lid on the simmering tensions simply by refusing to give any details at all of her own position.
But it has been more than three months since we voted to leave the EU, and her silence is now deafening.
We may learn more this weekend.
In an unprecedented move Mrs May has agreed to give two conference speeches in Birmingham – the first on Sunday focused on Brexit.
And I suspect that simply standing before a crowded conference hall repeating “Brexit means Brexit” over and over again for the best part of an hour is not going to cut it.

Meanwhile the stark reality of what Brexit could actually mean was pointed out last night by the head of Nissan.
Carlos Ghosn said the car firm will delay new investment in Britain until our new trading relationship with Europe becomes clearer.
“Important investment decisions will not be made in the dark,” he told the Paris Motor Show.
It is time for Mrs May to shine a little light on our direction of travel.

The Mirror Politics team will be donning our hard hats and braving the Tory mob in Brum to keep you posted on what happens. Wish us luck.
