| Morning, No offence to Labour but the big political news today is not the conference in Liverpool but the first US presidential debate. The overnight TV clash has been widely scored for Hillary Clinton, with Donald Trump floundering on his refusal to release his tax returns and his oafish sexism. Clinton was well prepared and professional. Trump was aggressive and bombastic. The fundamentals of the US race have not changed. Clinton is fit to be president but struggles for empathy. Trump is totally unfit to grace the White House but continues to defy all the normal rules of politics by remaining in contention. You can read our account of the debate here and the ten key points from night here. Labour is conscious that, now the leadership question has been settled, they must do more to harness its mass membership to boost the party's presence on the door-step. This weekend will see the launch of the campaign against grammar schools, Education not Segregation. This will aim to reach 1 million voters in key marginal seats such as Norwich North, Warrington South, Harrow East Stockton South and South Swindon as well as Labour-held areas. Half a million leaflets will be handed out and special phone banks set up to help spread the message. And Shadow Education Secretary Angela Rayner will email the 600,000 members to urge them to get involved. Labour did not have the best of days at conference yesterday with the unnecessary farce over Trident renewal. They will be hoping things run a bit smoother today, though the atmosphere is so febrile that there is always potential for another pratfall. The main speakers today are Tom Watson and London Mayor Sadiq Khan. The most eye-catching fringe has Lisa Nandy and Dan Jarvis talking about how Labour can win a general election. Both are talked about as future leadership contenders, so there will be an element of a beauty pageant - much to their dismay I suspect - about the event. It is also the night of the Mirror party so typing may be slow tomorrow. If you want to get in touch my email is jason.beattie@mirror.co.uk and you can follow us @mirrorpolitics on Twitter.
